HEAL™
Frequently Asked Questions
Connection. Learning. Confidence. Wellbeing.
-
Most HEAL™ sessions are approximately 45–60 minutes. Session length can be adapted depending on the participant’s age, needs, energy levels and ability to engage comfortably. With younger children or participants with additional needs, sometimes less is more.We offer a range of solutions designed to meet your needs—whether you're just getting started or scaling something bigger. Everything is tailored to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
-
Absolutely. HEAL™ is for children, rangatahi and adults. Our programmes are designed to support connection, confidence, self-awareness, emotional regulation and wellbeing at different stages of life.
-
No. You never have to ride. HEAL™ is about connection, not riding ability. Much of our work happens on the ground through simply being with the horse, observing, breathing, grooming, leading and building trust. Riding may be introduced when appropriate, but it is never the measure of a successful session.
-
We aim to make HEAL™ as inclusive and accessible as possible. A visually impaired child can experience a horse through touch, sound, movement, breath and physical presence. We will talk with you beforehand about your child’s individual needs and how we can create a safe and meaningful experience for them. You can reach us anytime via our contact page or email. We aim to respond quickly—usually within one business day.
-
We offer both individual and group experiences, depending on the programme. Some people benefit from the quiet, focused environment of one-to-one sessions, while others thrive through shared experiences and connection within a small group.
-
Costs vary depending on the programme, session length and whether the session is individual or group-based. Please contact us for current pricing. We are also working to build relationships with schools, organisations, funders and donors to help make HEAL™ accessible to people who may need additional support to participate.
-
Not at all. No previous horse or riding experience is required. HEAL™ isn’t about how well you can ride or how much you know about horses. We start exactly where you are and introduce the horse and the environment gently and safely.
-
That’s completely okay. There is no expectation that a participant immediately touches or approaches a horse. Connection can begin from a distance - watching, listening and simply sharing the same space. We allow trust to develop at the participant’s own pace.
-
HEAL™ is designed to be adaptable and individualised. We welcome conversations with families and support people about sensory, communication, developmental and learning needs so that we can determine how best to support each participant.
-
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for being outdoors and around horses. Closed-toe, sturdy footwear is essential. We can advise you of any additional requirements before your first session.
-
Because horses and the outdoors are an important part of HEAL™, weather can sometimes affect sessions. If conditions make a session unsafe or unsuitable, we will contact you to discuss rescheduling or an alternative.
-
Yes, particularly when this helps a child feel safe and settled. Over time, we may discuss whether giving the child some independent space could support their confidence and connection, but this will always be considered individually.
-
HEAL™ - Human Equine Assisted Learning - uses connection with horses to support learning, wellbeing, confidence and personal development. Each programme is designed around equine-assisted learning and is not presented as a replacement for clinical mental-health, medical or other professional treatment where that is required.
-
At the heart of HEAL™ is a simple belief: connection comes before expectation. We don’t measure success by whether someone rides a horse or completes a particular task. Sometimes the most meaningful moment is simply standing beside a horse, finding calm, sharing a breath and feeling connected. HEAL™ allows that moment to be enough.
-
No. HEAL™ is not a horse trekking or traditional riding centre. Our focus is on connection, learning, confidence and wellbeing through meaningful experiences with horses. While some HEAL™ programmes may include riding, the purpose is never simply to go for a ride-every interaction with the horse is intentional and part of the HEAL™ experience.

Yes - this is part of our vision for HEAL™.
One method. Many communities.
A world of connection.
We are currently developing the HEAL™ Method, training programme and supporting resources so that, in the future, others can learn and deliver the programme within their own communities.
Our vision is bigger than one location. We want to see HEAL™ Healing Hubs across Aotearoa and, eventually, around the world - creating safe spaces where people can experience learning, connection and wellbeing alongside horses.
The HEAL™ Method will be supported by a structured programme, resources and training to help ensure the values, integrity and kaupapa at the heart of HEAL™ are carried through wherever it is delivered.
If you are an individual, equine professional, school, organisation or community interested in bringing HEAL™ to your area, we would love to hear from you.
You can register your interest now and be kept informed as HEAL™ training and programme opportunities become available.
